Magnesium (Mg) is a metal. It's located in Group 2 of the periodic table, also known as the alkaline earth metals. This group is characterized by its metallic properties.

Defining Metals, Nonmetals, and Metalloids

To understand why magnesium is classified as a metal, let's briefly define each category:

  • Metals: Generally, metals are good conductors of heat and electricity, are malleable (can be hammered into sheets), ductile (can be drawn into wires), and have a shiny luster. They tend to lose electrons to form positive ions.

  • Nonmetals: Nonmetals are poor conductors of heat and electricity, are brittle, and lack the characteristic luster of metals. They tend to gain electrons to form negative ions.

  • Metalloids: Metalloids, also known as semimetals, exhibit properties of both metals and nonmetals. Their conductivity can vary depending on conditions, and they often have semiconductor properties.

Magnesium's Metallic Properties

Magnesium strongly exhibits the properties of a metal:

  • Excellent Conductor: Magnesium is a good conductor of both heat and electricity.
  • Malleable and Ductile: While not as malleable as some other metals, it can still be shaped and formed.
  • Luster: Magnesium possesses a characteristic metallic luster.
  • Electron Behavior: Magnesium readily loses two electrons to form a Mg²⁺ ion, a typical behavior of metals.

Therefore, based on its physical and chemical properties, magnesium is unequivocally classified as a metal.
