Understanding Swimmer's Itch

Swimmer's itch is not caused by swimming itself, but rather by exposure to certain types of microscopic parasites. These parasites, the larvae of certain species of parasitic flatworms (trematodes), usually infect birds and mammals. These larvae penetrate human skin, causing an allergic reaction manifested as itchy, red bumps. This usually occurs in freshwater areas where these parasite life cycles occur.

Can Dogs Get the Same Thing?

While dogs can be exposed to the same parasites, their thicker skin and fur generally provide some degree of protection. Therefore, it's less likely that dogs will develop the classic itchy rash associated with swimmer's itch in humans. However, dogs can experience skin irritation from contact with these parasites.

What might a dog experience?

Instead of the characteristic rash, a dog might display different symptoms, including:

Preventing Swimmer's Itch in Dogs

The best way to prevent potential issues is to avoid areas known to harbor these parasites. These are usually shallow, warm, and slow-moving bodies of freshwater. After swimming in such areas, thoroughly rinsing your dog's fur is advisable. Regular grooming can also help remove any parasites that might have attached to their fur.

If you notice any unusual skin irritation or digestive problems in your dog after swimming in a freshwater body, it's important to consult your veterinarian. They can properly diagnose the cause of the symptoms and recommend appropriate treatment.
